NOVEMBER

I AM THANKFUL FOR...
The Thanksgiving season always reminds me that I have so many things to be grateful for. I am so thankful for my wonderful in-laws that invited us to Thanksgiving dinner. It was delicious! I'm thankful to my sister for sacrificing sleep and braving the cold to go Christmas shopping at 3:30 in the morning on Black Friday. It was fun! I'm thankful to my family for who they are and everything that they do. I love you!

This month our family kept a list of all of the wonderful things that we have to be thankful for. We had things like:
-family
-friends
-Jesus Christ
-the scriptures
-our home
-food
-work

We also had things like:
-scissors
-toothpaste
-snow
-camping
-electricity
-BYU sports

Our list was pretty long and the boys were creative in thinking of things that they are thankful for. Keeping the list helped us to see how many blessings we have been given. I hope that this little activity will help us remember President Monson's words, that "our lives are blessed in countless ways", and that we should "cultivate within our hearts an attitude of gratitude."

LOVE THE LEAVES

T and S could hardly wait for enough leaves to fall so that they could rake them up and jump in them. They raked these up all by themselves. Then of course after all of that hard work they ran and jumped and played in the pile and scattered all the leaves.

If only they thought that putting the leaves in bags was as much fun as jumping in them.

THE WOLF
T is such a dedicated scout. He loves everything about scouts and gets so excited about all of the things they do. His favorite Wolf activities have been day camp and the pinewood derby. His favorite Wolf requirements were collecting, building a shelf, and family fun. He worked so hard to get all of his wolf requirements finished and was very excited this month to finally get his patch.
He thought it was great to have mom paint a wolf paw print on his face, too.

FAMILY PHOTOS
A friend of mine took our family pics this year. She did a really good job and we had fun. It was so much better than going to a portrait studio. I'll give her a plug- if you want to check her out you can at www.suzannesnapshots.com

OCTOBER

BIRTHDAY BOY
I don't know how my boys keep getting older, when I don't seem to be aging at all. Well, maybe I do have more aches and pains than I used to, and I will admit to pulling out a gray hair or two, but I don't feel like I'm old enough to have a 12 year old. Yet, he is 12 now, and I've watched him grow up. Z is such a wonderful son. He is obedient and responsible. He's funny and there are times that he surprises me. He is a good example to his brothers. I'm proud of him, and of all he has done in his 12 years of life. His dreams are so big and his future is so bright. I know he will do wonderful things and whatever it is that he does, I will always love him and always be so thankful that he is my son.

Happy Birthday Z!

TRICK-R-TREAT
Who doesn't love Halloween? I just love the days of trying to figure out Halloween costumes, and the last minute "I changed my mind- can you make me into a greek warrior instead?" I love being
the lucky one who gets to pull all the guts out of all the pumpkins, I can't figure out why no one else wants to do that. I love sugar crazed kids, who fight over who gets the only minature 100-Grand candy bar. I love it when I only have 3 pieces of candy left and a group of 7 kids waiting with bags open. Now I'm thinking I'll find out about the "Trick" part of trick-r-treat. Halloween really is fun.
What I do love is all of the fun decorations and the happy faces of kids. Their excitement really is a little bit contagious. S was so excited for his costume. He loved being a race car driver and wearing his costume to school. He did wonder though, why Grandma didn't bring him a racecar to go with it. T was Indiana Jones. He was very excited about the hat and the whip, but a little worried that his pants were not the same color of brown that Indy's pants were. Z could not make up his mind this year. He finally decided on a dead soccer player. The morning of the school parade we got his face all made up to look dead. After school when he came home, he said he thought he'd just be a regular soccer player instead. He did not like wearing make-up! Ahh.. Halloween, who doesn't love it!

SEPTEMBER

A TRIP TO THE THEATRE

Last April it was announced that the Lion King broadway show would be coming to the Capital Theatre in Salt Lake. My mom was so excited and really wanted to take our entire family to see it. She went up to the theatre on the morning that the tickets went on sale and stood in line to get her 18 tickets. The kids and Grandpa were a little nervous about going to a play. They didn't think they would like it.

And now, 5 months later, after we went to the play they discovered-They were wrong!(well Grandpa is not sure if he liked it, he didn't know what was going on) But the kids LOVED it. They sat on the edge of their seats the whole time, totally absorbed by the experience. It was amazing. My favorite part was the opening act when all the animals (including the giant elephant) came down the aisles. It almost brought me to tears. I really enjoyed it. Thanks mom!

Waiting outside the theatre for the doors to open. T is very excited.

Oh, the excitement-waiting for it to start.

SO MUCH SOCCER
With three boys playing soccer this month, it seems that soccer is all we have done. Nearly every night we've either had a game or a practice. Some nights we've had both. Even though it has been very busy, it has been fun to watch them all play and have fun with their teams. This was S's first experience being on a team and he just had a great time. He even scored a few goals. T's team did really great. They won every game, except for one tie. He was so excited to get a trophy and be in the newspaper. Z's team is doing really well. They have won more games than they've lost and they are working hard to finish the season strong. He has learned so much and has become a much better player. He's scored a few goals, too.

Go Cobra's!

AUGUST

NOSTALGIA
Irwin Idaho. A place that pretty much no one has ever heard of. The place that my great grandparents lived, where my grandmother was born, and where my mom, and then I, spent our childhood summers. I went back there this month, after having been away for many years, my last brief vist 5 years ago. I went back with my mom and my sister. We took the next generation with us, 6 kids (and 1 puppy). We went back to visit grandma, to reminisce, to clean the old (and I mean old) house, and to try to share a bit of our childhood with our children.

The old house.

It brought back so many wonderful memories. School getting out, and the excitement of summer in front of us. Counting down the days until we would make the long drive. So excited when we had made it to Idaho Falls. The landmarks that we recognized that told us our destination was near: the old red barn just outside of Idaho Falls, the Snake River, the beautiful Conant Valley, over the bridge, Swan Valley, and then finally Irwin. I used to love to look for the sign that told us we were entering Irwin. I wanted to see if the population had changed at all. It always hovered right around 130. Mom would stay a day or two and then leave us kids with Grandma for the next 4-6 weeks. Wonderful weeks! We would sleep on Grandma's living room floor, and wake up to music on the old record player or some program on TV that was mostly static because there was no reception there. We'd spend our days playing outside. Climbing trees, running around the property, visiting with Uncle Wes or Aunt Myrle or walking to the corner store for a bag of penny candy.

Yep, that's Z and K up at the top of the same tree we'd climb. I never went that high, but my brothers did.

We'd feed Roger's horses and beg to ride them. Soon enough Grandma would help us. She'd bridle old Sunday or Silver and we'd ride bare back around the back pasture. How we loved to ride those old, patient, slow horses. We'd beg to swim at the lake and Grandma would load us up and drive us to Palisades where we would spend hours swimming and jumping off the dock.

Our kids and Jack after swimming at Palisades.

T jumping off the dock.

We'd beg to go to Trober's, home of the world famous square icecream cone. Really, it was only world famous to us. We couldn't wait to have one. We'd beg to walk to the river, about 1/2 a mile away. Then Grandma would have to come with us, and would threaten us the whole way there, that we must stay back for if we fell in the current would sweep us away. To this day I remember my fear of the Snake and its current that was sure to drown me if I got to close.

Every night we would walk Jack and the kids down to the river, warning them as we were warned to stay back and be careful.

S in some old tree root next to the river.

We loved going to the laundry mat. We loved the trip to Idaho Falls where we would get our months worth of groceries, and eat lunch 'in town'. We loved going to Grandma's old Church in the Valley. We loved sitting on the side lawn and playing card games. I learned so many things in Irwin: to bake bread, to ride a horse, to gather eggs from the chickens, to play Canasta, to drive. I remember tractor rides with Uncle Wes.

A different uncle, different kids, and a different tractor,
but same kind of smiles.

I remember the old cabin, the chicken coop, the pump house, the wood shed. I remember laughing at the old outhouse and the thought of actually using it.

Z thought the outhouse was pretty cool.

I remember hotdog roasts at Rainy Creek, cooking on a stove that actually used burning wood, watching the bats come out at dusk. I remember crying the night Silver got into rat poisoning and died. There are so many memories. How thankful I am to have had those wonderful summers, and how glad I am to have shared a bit of that with my own children. It was a wonderul time.

GOING BACK
That time of year again. The days are getting a little bit shorter. The mornings are getting a little bit cooler. There are crayons and backpacks on sale at every store. It's time to go back to school. Z is in 6th grade now. He's the oldest in the school, though to me it seems like just yesterday he was in Kindergarten. The time has just flown by. I plan to enjoy this year and not wish it away, because next year he'll be off to junior high. Thinking about it makes me feel old.

My happy middle child is now in 3rd grade. T is very excited about school. He thinks his teacher is great and he can't wait to learn times tables and cursive. He still seems so young and carefree, yet I can see that he wants some responsibility too. He's growing up, and that makes me feel old.

And now my baby is going to school. I am so excited for him to meet new friends and try new things. I know that he will have fun. I know that he will be safe and happy. I can't wait to watch him learn and grow. But, as I send him off to Kindergarten, I feel old. It is a new stage of my life, having all three boys in school, and no little ones at home. And so, I too am going to school. I am excited to learn and grow. I'm excited to meet knew friends and face new challenges. It's wonderful, and it makes me feel young, so I guess that balances everything out.

A FRIEND
This month I said goodbye to a wonderful friend. She taught me to have faith, to have courage and to have a positive attitude. I miss seeing her in her high-heel shoes. I miss hearing her smiling voice on the phone. I miss how everytime I talked to her I came away feeling happier and better. She gave me so much more than I ever gave to her and I am so thankful to have known her.

JULY

AN EXCITING DAY
What an adventure we had traveling up to the Gateway. We were riding on the TRAX with Grandma and cousins when suddenly there was a slamming of brakes and T flew right out of his seat into my lap. A van pulled out right in front of the train and... well you know. Luckily no one was seriously injured. We were locked in the train car for about 10 minutes. The kids thought it was quite exciting to see all of the people and the Channel 2 news guy running down the city street as well as all of the emergency vehicles that were surrounding the area. They finally let us out of the train and we had to walk to our destination, about 6 blocks. The ride home wasn't nearly as exciting but it was a fun day!

Riding TRAX to Salt Lake.

Boys on the splash pad at the Gateway.

The ROCKIES
Z's team finished 6th place in the city tournament. Z played 2nd base and outfield. He had some great plays and hits, too. Now baseball is over, just in time for soccer to start back up again.

YOUTH CONFERENCE
J invited me to come with him and the youth on their youth conference this year. We traveled to Green River where we did some work for the community center there. It was inspiring to see the youth serving so willingly. During the afternoon we went rafting on the Green River. The day was hot and the mosquitos were out in full force, but we just put on sun screen and bug spray and had a great time.

This cool tree was at the spot where we put the rafts into the river.

J and I on the raft. We had just come out of one of the more rough parts of the river. J swallowed a mouth full of water. He thought it was great and wanted to go again.

SWIMMING
All of the cousins like to play in Grandma's pool, although some like it more than others. T won't get in the pool very often because it is "too cold". S is a little bit nervous because it is deep, he will only get in if he can hold my hand. The older kids love it though.

Nice goggles!

These guys would hardly even hold still for a picture.

The Veterans Memorial pool in Provo is one of our favorites!

Waiting so patiently for the 20 minute pool check to be finished.

Has to plug his nose.

These boys went on the slides a bunch and had a great time together!

PETE'S HOLE
Some pictures of our camping trip with friends.

Collecting firewood.

Fishing- no luck though.

CELEBRATING PIONEER DAY
Celebrating the 24th of July with the Childrens Parade, the big parade, and fireworks on the night of the 24th.

The kids love the children's parade. This year Z rode his bike and T rode a scooter. S rode in the trailer with his friends.

Sparklers.

Z and friends watching the fireworks.

ZOO
My wonderful friend Tina invited us to the zoo and it was so much fun. We saw the monkeys playing and teasing each other. We saw the baby elephant. We saw a tiger going for a swim. We saw giraffes and alligators, and snakes and penguins and so much more. We rode on the train and the carousel, but the best part of the day was the bird show. It scared me every time they flew over our heads. Sometimes they were so close that we could feel the wind from their wings. There were all kinds of birds. T couldn't believe he actually got to see a bald eagle.

Z and T with some giraffes.

S on the carousel. He was riding a seal. So fun.

A bunch of apes.

Love the train.
